Neck Edema Following Thyroidectomy

Neck Edema Following Thyroidectomy

  • Laryngotracheal edema:
    • Can be a cause of respiratory obstruction after extensive thyroid surgery
  • After bilateral lymphadenectomy:
    • Disturbances of lymphatic flow may be the cause of edema
  • Pharyngolaryngeal edema:
    • Is a well-recognized complication caused by the endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask and can also occur in association with an anaphylactoid reaction
      • Steroid therapy, occasionally in combination with temporary reintubation:
        • Leads to rapid relief
